Château de Caumont
A gem of Gascon Renaissance architecture in Cazaux-Savès, just a stone's throw from La Maison Bleue — one of our guests' favourite outings.
Five centuries of Gascon history
Built on the ruins of a medieval fortress that once belonged to Gaston Fébus, Château de Caumont was extensively remodelled during the Renaissance (1525–1535) by Pierre de Nogaret de La Valette, who had accompanied King François I on his campaigns in Italy. The design is believed to be the work of the Toulouse architect Nicolas Bachelier, with an outdoor gallery inspired by the Hôtel d'Assézat in Toulouse.
The estate hosted King Henri IV on several occasions as a child, and he stayed in the royal bedroom in the north wing. Other notable residents include Jean-Louis de La Valette, Duke of Épernon, and General the Marquis de Castelbajac, Napoleon III's ambassador to Saint Petersburg — whose family still runs the estate today, as they have since 1979. The right wing, destroyed by fire, was rebuilt in 1658. The Queen Mother of England visited in 1988.
The château has been a listed historic monument since 1943, with its park and outbuildings listed since 1984.
Architecture & interiors
The château combines a defensive medieval section — two underground levels and four diamond-pointed corner towers — with a Renaissance wing featuring a staircase "in the Florentine style" and a gallery flooded with light.
Inside: two troubadour-style drawing rooms with Pompeian-Directoire ceilings, and a romantic chapel with stained-glass windows by the master glazier Maréchal, who also created windows for the Basilica of Fourvière in Lyon.
A 50-hectare park
The wooded estate offers views of the Pyrenees, a five-hundred-year-old oak tree, a romantic English-style garden with its period irrigation system, and an ice house dating from the 1850s.

The château is generally open in July and August (days and hours vary by season — please check directly with the château before visiting). Guided château tours from €13; park-only access from €5.
